Happy November 1st!
Happy 1st day of national blog posting month! I’m hoping that by joining in and posting every day this month it will become a habit and I’ll continue to post every day!
And on with the show…
October 30th was Aidan’s 2nd birthday. Happy belated birthday my terrible two boy! We had the “big” party earlier in October celebrating Zoe’s 1st, Andy’s 12th, and Aidan’s 2nd, so his birthday was a traditional just the family party. By traditional I mean that every child’s birthday since Alex’s second birthday I make the birthday child’s favorite dinner, we sing happy birthday while lighting the candles on the cupcakes I made earlier in the day, and finally the birthday child gets to open the present from Joe and I. It is a tradition that has been enjoyable for the kids and Joe and I, and for good reason. With 3 children born in October, that doesn’t leave much in the way for individual birthday attention.
Then there was Halloween! The kids were oh-so-cute in their costumes. Zoe especially! She got so many oohs and ahs. Aidan and Zoe seemed to be fairly “original” in their horse and ladybug costumes. I didn’t see any other ladybugs, and only two other horses, but the costumes weren’t that identical. Alex on the other hand… Like almost every other boy his age was Captain Jack Sparrow. I swear I saw at least 5 other identical Captain Jacks costumes, and a few other “generic” pirate costumes whom young boys were announcing they were also Captain Jack. It was weird. Not surprising, but weird. Especially when Alex stood next to them.
Aidan really enjoyed trick or treating! I remember when Alex was two and went trick or treating for the first time, he was so scared! He refused to go up any steps, and if there were any scary noises of any kind (music, mats you step on, etc.) he would try and run away. Not Aidan! Aidan wasn’t sure what was going on at first, but after about two houses he dove right in walking from house to house, taking candy, and even saying the occasional thank you. I was so proud of him!
Zoe is too young for trick or treating, mostly because she isn’t very good at walking yet and has only 4 teeth teeth. Instead she stayed with Joe at the house and handed out candy. She got restless while sitting on her daddy’s lap and wanted to creep and crawl around the front step and yard. From what Joe says one young trick-or-treater girl thought Zoe was a real dog and refused to go near her to get some candy! So funny!
All in all, it was a nice night. Not to cold, not to hot. Kids enjoyed themselves. What really surprised me more than anything though was the fact that out of all the houses in the entire court there were less than 12 people (including us) handing out candy! This court has probably 40 houses. The next neighborhood over, had almost ever single house lit and participating. I’m told by some of the older kids in the neighborhood that most of the other courts had pretty high participation too. So maybe we just live in the “bad seed court” of the neighborhood? I hated myself for thinking it last night, but I wished that all of those houses would get egged. Out neighborhood has a 6pm to 8pm rule that I’ve never seen anyone not adhere to. Thats just two hours. Religious reasons I get, but this “I can’t be bothered” excuse is just sad. What, were they never kids? Do they not have kids? Do they not have grandkids? I don’t think so.
