Modern Princess

Aidan’s obsession with the bathroom.

Ever since Aidan was little he has always been curious about the bathroom. Like most young babies, he would crawl/walk into the bathroom with me. He would also follow Joe and Alex into the bathroom from time to time. Last summer when I toilet trained Andrew (special needs, remember?), I would bring Aidan and Zoe in the bathroom with me to hear stories and songs of using the toilet and washing hands. It was basically the only way I could keep an eye on the younger kids while giving Andrew 100% of my attention, but they didn’t seem to mind, especially Aidan.

Recently his curiosity has grown into an obsession. I started noticing a few weeks ago that Aidan would stop playing with me and his sister, and just walk into the bathroom. When he came out I could smell that he had pooped. One time I was curious as to what he would do when he walked into the bathroom, I followed him. I saw him stand in front of the toilet and squat in front of it for a minute or two, until he came out. Then, I changed his diaper. It was kind of funny. Another time I was in the bathroom brushing my teeth when he barged in, lifted up the toilet seat, pulled down his pants slightly, and tried to pull down the front of his diaper. When that didn’t work, he tried to stick his hand in the front of his diaper like he was trying to get his penis out. After a few failed attempts, he ultimately gave up, hiked his pants back up, and walked out of the bathroom.

I’m pretty proud of that type of interest in the bathroom and toilet, and in either case I’ve never done anything to discourage what he was doing. Although I feel he isn’t quite ready to be toilet trained, I do believe he has made amazing progress for a 2 year old.

In the past couple of days however, his interest in the bathroom and its uses have grown beyond the toilet. For the past two mornings, and yesterday afternoon, I caught him “washing his face.” The first morning I walked into the bathroom and Aidan had spread Kandoo soap (basically this foam that comes out of a pump style bottle) all over his face. Which wasn’t a big deal. It’s kid friendly soap and easy to clean up. The next morning Aidan decided to wash his face with the diaper rash cream that he found in the top shelf of the medicine cabinet. It was spread all over his cheeks and ears! What a mess! That I was not pleased with at all. I guess he realized this, because that afternoon I found him using the Kandoo soap again, only this time he was sucking on his hands trying to eat it.

But it gets better. I imagine that his morning he had finished washing his face before I came in the bathroom, because when I walked in there he was using a makeup brush to put on some powdered foundation. It was a bit weird and funny watching my son put on makeup, and if it wasn’t dangerous letting him continue I probably would have grabbed the camera rather than taking it away from him immediately.

I guess I should count my lucky stars that he is just imitating good hygiene. It could be worse, he could be flushing keys and other valuables down the toilet.
