Modern Princess

I’ve never done laundry before.

Joe has been sick all weekend and it is continuing to today.

Since Joe does the laundry on the weekends, it never got done. Come this morning I’m trying to get Alex ready for school and I freak out because I realize he has no pants. Not to mention I have no sweaters, and Zoe and Aidan have nothing weather appropriate. Even though Joe is home today, he is still very sick and needs his rest, so it is up to me to do laundry.

You know whats sad? I have no idea how to do laundry. My mom always did it for me. Seriously, I would ask her how to do it and she would tell me not to worry about it that she would do it for me. Now I may not have been a normal teenager to ask how to do laundry, but I was normal enough not to say no to letting someone else do it for you. When I moved in with my husband I tried to learn, but Joe was just so particular about using three different kinds of detergent for different loads and certain things couldn’t be mixed in with other things that I just got confused, threw my hands up and said “Fine, you do it!”

And he has.

So now I’m doing it. Well, after whining to Robin about teaching me over the phone how to do laundry that is. Let me just say that it is scary and I’m constantly worried that I’m going to mess up and turn the whites pink or shrink something. I actually did mess up on my first load. Apparently the detergent cup is lost, and without knowing his I used an old one and filled it to the bottom line. I found out that the old cup goes to “standard” detergent and the new cup goes to “concentrated” detergent so I ended up using double the amount of soap. Oops! Oh well, I just solved the problem by running an extra rinse cycle and the clothes seemed ok after that.

You know what else? Although Joe has always been great about washing, drying, and folding the clothes over the years (obviously or we would be naked all the damn time), putting them away is another story. We have huge piles of clothes sitting in the laundry room. So I decided that since I’m doing laundry, I would do something about these big piles of clothes. Now it is too much to tackle in one sitting. I’ve got three other kids to take care of, other cleaning jobs to do (general vacuuming, mopping, and dusting today), and food to make and serve. So I came up with a plan that every time I pull out a load from the dryer to fold and put away, I would fill the basket. At first I would just take a little bit extra from the piles of clothes, but after a couple of loads I found myself with another empty basket to fill and put away. I’ve made quite a dent in the laundry room, which makes me really happy. I’ve also sorted some of the clothes out and put them in bags to donate, so now when AmVets or Purple Heart calls (I donate regularly to both) I’ll be able to tell them that yes, I do have some things they can pick up.

Woohoo.
