Another semester bites the dust.
About an hour ago I just turned in my final exam for Processes and Acquisition of Reading. Which of course, means I’m done for the summer semester. I have to say, I’m incredibly glad that I took this class. It has been very enlightening in not only what it takes to be a teacher in regards to creating lesson plans, evaluating students, and other “behind the scenes” items of importance so to speak, but also in teaching Alex how to read and write. A lot of what I learned is really practical for any parent with a young child in the process of their language and literacy development. The projects were pretty awesome as well. During one project I was required to assess a child between the ages of 4 and 7 on their language, reading, and writing development. Of course I chose Alex. It was really neat actually seeing for myself where he is on the developmental scale and why, rather than just being told about it by someone else. However, I think I’ll take the networking factor with me more than anything else I learned. I met some really great people in the classroom. Some were like me and just wanted to be teachers, so I now have an idea on what the competition is like. Some were already teachers, which I figure will be more than helpful come job applying time that hopefully I’ll run into a few friendly faces which will help me get my foot in the door. And finally, and most awesomely, I met a couple of special education teachers, specifically one who works with autistic children. I found out that she does things such as providing in home services for special needs kids, for example she will come to your home and toilet train them (side note: her and I compared “methods” and they are surprisingly similar considering shes trained and I’m not). You can bet I’ve got her phone number and email address!
