Modern Princess

Christmas excitement lasts for 2 weeks.

Now that it is 2 weeks after Christmas I find myself saying “And I bought them more toys why again? They don’t play with them!” That’s because the new toy excitement has worn off. Which, after several years of celebrating Christmas as a parent, you would think I would learn this by now. Yet every year it is a shock to my system that it only takes two weeks for them to toss their toys in the box never to be seen again. And a bit of a blow to my ego to find out that once again my attempt to give them the toys that will stand the test of time has failed.

The rose petal cottage? It is now a toy box for stuffed animals and dolls.

The kid tough digital camera? It was forgotten about the second time the kids ran the batteries dead.

The rubik’s cube? I haven’t seen that in a week. It didn’t even make the two week cut.

The slinky? Now that made the two week cut, but now it’s kinda bent out of shape.

The new nerf gun? It’s laying on the floor in the playroom. It seems as if the nerf darts have all been fired…and who knows where they are. A nerf gun without darts just isn’t fun.

So what exactly are the kids playing with if they aren’t playing with toys? Well folks, the answer to that would be stock pots (yes, I know my kids are INSANE)! The kids have taken 3 out of 4 of my stock pots (thanks for leaving me one to make dinner with kiddos! Appreciate it!). What could possibly be so interesting about them? Well so far…

1. Turn them over and they make EXTREMELY NOISY drums.

2. When you get bored of drumming sit on them and read a book, watch tv, or just sit for the sake of sitting on a stock pot.

3. Pick them up and use them as hats that cover your entire head so when you walk around you run into a wall and then fall and laugh and laugh.

4. Play tug a war with them. Each kid gets to grab a handle and pull and scream at the other kid because they want to play with that one particular stock pot even though there are 2 more sitting on the floor.

5. Stand on them. This is especially fun if you stand on the one stock pot that rocks back and forth when upside down. Then when you fall and hurt yourself you can laugh and laugh.

6. Stand inside of them. But this isn’t as fun as standing on the one that rocks, and just makes you look a little funny.

7. Put the toys that you aren’t playing with inside of them and put them back where they belong. Then watch mommy grab the pot, put it on the stove, and freak out when she realizes its full of toys that she is about to cook. Then laugh and laugh.

8. Lay on top of them, stick your arms out in front of you and “fly.”

9. When you accidentally spill your juice or milk, instead of telling mom, cover it up with a stock pot.

10. Use it as a step stool to climb on top of the kitchen counter, to get into the kitchen cabinets, to get into the cookies. Then eat them real quick. If there is a mess of crumbs or a package of leftover cookies, cover it up with a stock pot.

Big boxes were very popular at my house. The bigger the box, the longer the fascination lasted.
